What Is Seldon of Value?

Seldon of Value is an investment blog that follows me managing a $100K virtual portfolio. I started the Substack during my senior year of high school to publicly record my investment rationale and receive feedback from others.

Who Am I?

If you haven’t guessed already, Seldon is an alias. The blog is named after the character Hari Seldon: the famous mathematician from Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series. I keep the blog anonymous because I want to be judged on the quality of my ideas, not the person behind them.

Offline, I’m a college student studying economics at Notre Dame. I aspire to have a long-term career in public equities investing

You can also follow me on Twitter: @SeldonofValue. My Twitter is marginally less serious than the Substack (i.e lots of Notre Dame Football tweets).

Why do I write?

I view my Substack as a public investment journal. The intrinsic purpose of my writing is threefold:

  • Accountability: Given my career aspirations, I want to establish a track record of my stock picks–both the great ones and the ones that fall flat on their face. I welcome any feedback and will respond to all comments left.

  • Identity: While I consider myself a value investor, that identity is not set in stone. It’s too early in my career to pigeonhole myself to one philosophy. By sharing actionable investment ideas, I hope to discern which ideas work along with which ones I feel the most comfortable with.

  • Achievement: At the end of my 2022 year review, I stated the end goal of my writing was to earn a membership in Value Investors Club. I believe consistent writing and revision will facilitate the level of thought necessary to break into the internet’s most elite investment community.

Historical Returns:

A table of my historical returns since the blog’s inception:*

*Long-time readers may notice a discrepancy in the 2022 returns reported in the table versus the figure in my 2022 annual review. My initial report stated my portfolio was up 1% in 2022. Unfortunately, There was a mistake in my original calculation that has since been corrected. I apologize for the error and will do better going forward.

Disclaimer:

None of my writing should be considered financial advice. Relying on a twenty-year-old college kid for stock tips is not a recipe for financial success.  Do your own diligence.
